Call for proposals

i3 at Orbit/Comdex Europe 2001 (Basel, 25 - 28 September 2001)

Dear i3net member,

The i3 community has been offered a large exhibition area (420 m2) at Orbit/Comdex Europe 2001 (Basel, 25-28 September 2001), to set up an “i3 research village”, an environment showing state-of-the-art research results organised theme-wise. Philips Design will supervise the overall design of the village. Proposals are invited from i3 members interested in exhibiting at the i3 research village.

Comdex is America's foremost information technology and communication show, now also organised in Europe under the auspices of Messe Basel. It is expected to attract about 95.000 professionals, and the i3 research village will probably have in the region of 20.000 visitors. In short, this is an outstanding opportunity to exhibit to an interested, well-targeted audience (many of whom will be people in industry) at a prestigious, high-profile event. See www.messebasel.ch/orbitcomdex.

Proposals are invited for both exhibits and videos for the Orbit/Comdex i3 research village. Displayed work can include, but should not be limited to, results arising from projects in the Connected Community, Inhabited Information Spaces and Experimental School Environments research programmes. All i3 members, as well as those in the process of becoming members, are invited to contribute.

Proposals should be for physical exhibits or videos showing high-quality results that are accessible, visual and exciting to a wide audience. These results should incorporate or illustrate some of the distinguishing aspects of the i3 community (such as collaboration between different disciplines, a focus on the needs of ordinary people and communities, the central role of art and design, a strong interest in learning…) in the context of advanced research into new interfaces.

On the basis of these criteria, an exhibition committee will select 15 - 20 exhibits and 15 - 20 videos to be shown as part of the Orbit/Comdex i3 research village. The chosen exhibits and videos will determine the themes of the village. For each theme, the physical exhibits and the videos will be shown together, with a separate large-screen video-cinema per theme.

  • Deadline for proposals: 15 March
  • Final decision on accepted proposals: 23 April

Content of proposals
Proposals should contain

  • a brief description of what will be shown, including visual impact
  • whether it involves an exhibit or video
  • (in the case of an exhibit) a brief outline of space, installation and equipment requirements
  • needs for limited i3net support (primarily finished i3 projects, see below)

i3 Annual Event
The i3 presence at Orbit/Comdex Europe will be the focal point of this year's i3 Annual Event. There will be a number of special i3 activities that will give us the chance to come together as a community, including talks, social events, and an Annual General Meeting. The i3 research village will also contain a piazza where i3 members can meet, catch up and debate informally. Some hotels within short travelling distance to Basel have been booked as the accommodation base for members of the i3 community. All i3 members will have free access to the whole of Orbit/Comdex Europe 2001.

Exhibitors should ensure that their exhibit will be adequately staffed throughout the four days of the Orbit/Comdex event.

ESE reviews
All finishing ESE projects will be reviewed in Basel and will therefore automatically be part of the i3 research village. Coordinators of these projects are kindly requested to submit an exhibit proposal under the present call as well.

Financial support
Exhibition space at Orbit/Comdex is free, as is technical assistance. Participating members will generally be expected to carry other costs themselves, and are encouraged to seek sponsorship from companies involved in the project results. A limited amount of financial support from i3 is available in cases where no sufficient funds can be found, and must be negotiated on an individual basis. The support will be given primarily to already finished i3 projects which have high-quality results to exhibit, such as those presented in Jönköping. We expect to support 5-10 finished i3 projects with amounts up to 2000 Euros.
