Workshop on personalised and social navigation in information spaces

First Call

A 2-day workshop in association with IFIP working group WG13.2 and the Navigation SIG of Esprit's i3net, Information Intelligence Interfaces network of excellence.

Location on 16th and 17th March 1998 Stockholm

Theme

The predominant metaphor for human-computer interaction - direct manipulation, graphical menus and window-based displays - seems to have reached its peak. What is needed is not only new visions of computers and computer technology. We also need to take a serious questioning look at our current conceptions of the human in human-computer interactions. The dominant view of a person within the computer industry is of a goal-driven individual. People are assumed to know what they want to do. Accordingly, workers in interface labs all over the world try to devise tools that will help the user in finding and reaching the goal, but navigation can be much more than just searching in a goal-oriented manner: it can be exploration of an information space, or identification of objects in the space. The purpose of this workshop is to look at an alternative conception of design of space and navigation, namely users as individuals navigating in a social information space.

This view of navigation leads to a number of issues not normally addressed in the discipline

- supporting information retrieval through communication between people
- personalizing information to the information seeker
- individual differences and navigation
- facilitating social interactions in information spaces
- supporting navigation in complex spaces
- concepts of navigation
- people navigating in 'real world' information spaces
- people navigating in other spaces such as film, theatre, architecture
- cognitive aspects of navigation
- social aspects of navigation - the social construction of information spaces

Participation and paper submission

Participation is limited. To join the workshop, participants should either submit a position paper or send a description of a demonstration or video. Position papers dealing with any area of personalised and social navigation in information spaces are welcome. Papers may be theoretical or empirical, but they should focus on one or more of the issues described above. Informal discussions or abstracts may be sent to one of the co-chairs prior to the deadline for final submissions. Position papers must be received by 30 Nov. 1997. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to develop full versions of their position papers by the end of February.

The position papers should be up to 2000 words, and can be sent either as postscript or a Word file.

Participants are encouraged to include URLs related to navigation (bibliographies, papers, projects, tools, systems).

Send all submissions electronically to one of:

kia@sics.se
d.benyon@dcs.napier.ac.uk

If you are unsure whether your file will print at our site, please submit four days before the deadline in order to receive a confirmation.
