Community of the Future — what is it about?

“Community of the Future: New visions of Information Technology scenarios” is the theme of this year’s i3 Annual Conference. The central metaphor will be that of the theatre: at the heart of the event will be a stage where innovative work will be presented in innovative formats.

Within this framework, contributions will take many shapes. There will be Live Performances, a Piazza where i3 projects will show their work in action, and an Underground café for discussion and debate. Quality of content and creativity of presentation will be determining factors in the selection of contributions.

Who is it for?

Everybody in the field is welcome to contribute or attend. The aim is to provide a stage for innovative technology worldwide, so we are encouraging participation from all over the world.

For i3, the event will be an opportunity to view its philosophy and achievements. i3 projects will get a chance to display their results to an international audience, and to have them debated in a creative environment.

For non-i3 members, Community of the Future will be a unique opportunity to find out about i3net and the results of the i3 projects, to present their own achievements as a showcase, and to play an active role in the event.

What actions are planned for i3 members?

All i3 projects will be given space within the piazza to present their achievements in an interactive and participatory format. We will be collaborating closely with i3 projects to transform the overall conference metaphor into real stage design.

The official EC reviews will also take place during the conference. In collaboration with the relevant EC representatives we are currently working on an appropriate reviewing mechanism which will fit in with the larger event and its metaphor.

Sponsorship

The overall design of Community of the Future offers a wide spectrum of possibilities for sponsorship, and we hope to attract as many sponsors as possible, in order to guarantee a high-quality event and an acceptable fee structure. i3 members who have ideas or suggestions for sponsorship should contact us right away.

Call for entries

Community of the Future envisions new information technology scenarios that have the potential to empower ordinary people in their everyday social interactions. The event will be styled in the form of a research theatre.

Proposals are invited from research groups all over the world for any of the following three components : 'Live performances', 'Piazza' and 'Underground'. We expect this novel format to result in creative communication and lively interactions amongst a multi-disciplinary audience.

Live performances

Performances on the stage may involve team members, users, the audience or others. Concrete pragmatic scenarios based on scientific research as well as poetic, philosophical or other forms of creative interpretation are also welcome. Proposers are encouraged to employ creative formats from the performing arts.

Piazza

Proposers may also set up models or working demos of their products in the piazza under any of the following thematic areas:

@home - products for use at home

time out - entertainment and leisure

street smart - products in public spaces and booo!! - a special section for young children

The concept design for the piazza will be developed jointly with the selected proposers. A limited number of relevant commercial products may also be demonstrated. The piazza is likely to be open to the general public and the press for a limited time during the event.

Underground

Controversial and provocative topics may be debated at the underground café. A few selected proposals will be scheduled beforehand, while the audience may organise other topics on an impromptu basis.

Submissions

Proposals are due for submission by May 15, 1999. Proposers of entries that have been selected will be notified by the end of June 1999. The selection criteria and procedures for submission will shortly be available on the Web.

All proposals will be reviewed by a multi-disciplinary programme committee representing the fields of computer technology, design, performing arts, sociology, education and policy making.

Entries submitted by i3net projects for the 'Piazza' area will be accepted without review. However, entries by i3net members for 'Live peformances' and 'Underground' will be reviewed by the programme committee.
