Island setting for navigation workshop

The Workshop on Personalised and Social Navigation in Information Spaces, organised as part of the PERSONA project in association with IFIP working group WG13.2 and the Navigation SIG of i3net, took place on 16th and 17th March 1998 near Stockholm. Appropriately, it was held on an island in the archipelago, and delegates successfully navigated to Ljusterö on Sunday 15th, and back to Stockholm on Tuesday 17th, having in the interim been fortified in their real navigational endeavours by the traditional comforts of Scotland (the Scotch) and Sweden (the Sauna).

Co-chaired by Kristina Höök, David Benyon, and Alan Munro, it explored an alternative conception of design of space and navigation - namely, users as individuals navigating in a social information space.

Kristina Höök said afterwards: "The workshop was great! We had 31 participants, from several countries", and Alan Munro wrote from Edinburgh: "The two days were hectic, with a lot of good presentations of papers. There was hardly any time when participants were lost for words! The workshop generally had a very good atmosphere, and it seemed, although it was very short, to have helped to generate a little research community".

There were in addition a number of 'break out' sessions with further discussion on the points brought up by the papers and subsequent question sessions. At least one of these will lead to the writing of an academic paper directly arising from the discussion in the sessions. There is likely to be a fair amount of academic collaboration arising from the workshop.

As well as a number of demos from academic research groups, there were two demos from the laboratories of Philips and BT Labs. These were very successful and promoted a lot of discussion.

The workshop was generally agreed to have been such a success that we have decided provisionally to hold another workshop at roughly the same time next year.
