Thousands of people - one Living Memory Don't be surprised if you, in the nearby future, can be seated at the local café and keep an eye on your next door neighbour's thoughts, check out what is playing in the movie theatre, or find out if the cheesemonger's uncle was your Grandmother's cousin. All made very quick and easy with the help of computer technology that is integrated in a whole new way in the things surrounding you; the table at the café or the bench by the bus stop. For some people this is already happening. For technologies, like the one's mentioned above, has already been developed and tested in an international project. The project is called LiMe for Living Memory and has been developed by a team of scientists under the European organisation called i3. The LiMe Project will be exhibited on IST2000 in Nice 6th 8th of November 2000 LiMe is about new ways of computing that eventually will make it easier for people in a local community to communicate with each other about local area history, local news and personal experiences. The purpose of this is to create a kind of shared memory in order for the treasures and complexities in local cultures everywhere to be explored and preserved. The project has been developed in a co-operation between scientists and people from a neighbourhood in Edinburgh, who have already tested the LiMe coffee tables.
Networked Interactive Media in Schools At IST2000 i3 will exhibit a grand project: NIMIS (Networked Interactive Media in Schools). NIMIS has revolutionised classroom technology by developing a fully-integrated networked classroom infrastructure that is transparent and accessible, that supports team work and provides a great deal of freedom for the children.
More Facts About i3 The European Union founded i3 in 1996. i3 aims to change technology by developing radical new ways of computing, as well as interfaces that are transparent and intuitive to use. These radical changes give more scope to things that the technological developers have largely neglected so far: Social contact and community-building, creativity, joy and play, mobility ‹ the kinds of things that enhance the quality of life, and makes life easier rather instead of harder. People of various backgrounds (teachers as well as computer scientists, psychologists alongside designers and artists) collaborate in i3 to make this happen.
i3 Will Be Present at More Exhibits in November Many of i3's results have now reached a sufficient degree of maturity and practicality to be of real interest to people. This is marked by the fact that the results will be exhibited at the following three large and influential events during the month of November: IST2000 in Nice, e-culture in Amsterdam and Salon de l'Education in Paris (information on this follows).
