Future probe on video games.
Launched: 1 January 2000. We believe it might be possible to open up the invisible workings of state-of-the-art video games in a clear and coherent way, so that kids can come into contact with the powerful and culturally resonant ideas locked inside the code. It is culturally impressive that some kids want to crack the code (as evidenced by the huge number of websites on 'cheats'), but it hardly counts as 'learning' on any grand scale. If we could make games genuinely designable and buildable by kids, we would have unlocked huge learning potential.
